Kejriwal expresses concern over death due to poisonous liquor in Punjab, demands CBI probe

New Delhi: The death toll due to drinking poisonous liquor has reached 100 in Punjab. Meanwhile, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has demanded a CBI inquiry into the matter. Kejriwal tweeted on Sunday that the state government needs to take urgent steps to curb liquor mafia.




Kejriwal expressed concern over the rise in the number of deaths due to poisonous liquor and told Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh from Punjab that the matter should be immediately handed over to the CBI as illegal liquor cases have increased for the past few months. None of these cases have been resolved by the local police.

So far, 100 have died in Punjab due to drinking poisonous liquor.


In Punjab, the death toll by drinking poisonous liquor has increased to 100 on Saturday. 41 people died on Saturday. These included 37 Tarn Taran, one from Amritsar and three from Batala. Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder has announced to give two lakh rupees to the victims' families.


In Punjab's three border districts, Tarn Taran, Amritsar and Gurdaspur, 42 people died on Friday after drinking poisonous country liquor, while seven died in Amritsar a day earlier. However, the government had confirmed just 38 deaths. A total of 100 deaths were confirmed till Saturday. After raiding the case, police raided around 100 places. Three dhabas were sealed. 17 accused have been arrested by conducting raids in Patiala, Amritsar, Gurdaspur and Tarn Taran. Eight accused were also arrested on Friday.
