The industry is liking Kejriwal's new electric vehicle policy; Other states can learn

  • The new policy provides more financial incentives than the central government's FAME subsidy
  • Incentives up to Rs 30,000 for two-wheelers, autos and e-rickshaws and freight carriers, and up to Rs 1.5 lakh for four-wheelers.
  • Exemption from EVS registration and road tax will be given. Commercial vehicles also get an interest waiver on the loan.
Delhi's Kejriwal government has also introduced a scraping incentive for buyers willing to replace old conventional vehicles with new electric vehicles.

India's electric vehicle industry has praised the Delhi government's new electric vehicle policy announced by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Friday. Companies said that there are many pioneering ideas in the policy and other states of the country can learn from it.

The new policy provides financial incentives to purchase more electric vehicles in addition to the subsidy already being provided under the central government's FAME scheme. Delhi is regularly included in the list of most polluted cities in the world and has long felt the need to reduce vehicular pollution.

“I would like to congratulate the Government of Delhi for launching a new electric vehicle policy which will go a long way to boost Delhi's economy, create jobs, and reduce air pollution in the national capital. The incentives announced under this policy will be beneficial for the customers. And will certainly help Delhi achieve its goal of electrification of vehicles. "

Said Naveen Munjal, MD, Hero Electric, India's largest electric two-wheeler manufacturer. "I hope this will inspire other states of India to adopt similar measures."

Electric vehicle sales have flopped in India over the past few years due to uncertainty in policy and lack of incentives from the government. The industry volume in 2019-20 was 1.56 lakh units as compared to 1.3 lakh units in 2018-19. There is a large proportion of two-wheelers in 1.52 lakh units. Sales of conventional vehicles on petrol and diesel were 21.5 million units.

This is a historical policy. Financial incentives on loans address the electric vehicle challenges of promoting cost differentials in relation to construction and manufacturing of charging stations. Kovid-19 gave us a rare glimpse into the clear sky.

Chief Executive Officer Saurav Kumar said, "Less AQI air for breathing." We believe that accelerating electric vehicles will have health, geopolitical and economic benefits. "

The founder, Euler Motors, is a Delhi-based EV start-up, with more than 200 light commercial electric vehicles already deployed in the NCR.

"We believe this policy will help India's emergence as a capital for other cities around the world in the long run - and not only reduce dependence on ICE but provide a closer impact as a safer environment. "

The Delhi government said that it would also set up a separate state EV board, EV fund, and EV cell to promote the use of electric vehicles in the state. Infrastructure development will also be taken care of as the government expects to register 5 lakh vehicles in the next 5 years. There are plans to set up 200 charging stations a year in Delhi and an electric station every 3 km.
