Gorakhpur: Samajwadi Party has announced the mayor candidate in Gorakhpur. The party has fielded Kajal Nishad, who has twice contested from the Campierganj constituency, as its mayor candidate. However, he had to face defeat in the assembly elections. SP has bet on the backward caste even after having a general seat.

Political experts say that the equation that the SP has tried to create is that along with getting the traditional votes, the backward caste people should be attracted towards them. Due to Kajal Nishad's mayoral candidate, the vote of the Nishad community may increase.

Kajal Nishad is a resident of Bhowapar, Gorakhpur. Her husband Sanjay Nishad is a film producer. Kajal has twice contested from the Campierganj assembly on an SP ticket. However, both times they have to face defeat. Prior to this, she contested from the rural assembly in 2012 on a Congress ticket. She joined SP in 2021.

Kajal Nishad has welcomed this decision of the party's high command. He tweeted that, on behalf of the entire Nishad community, many thanks to the top leadership, Honorable National President Mr. Akhilesh Yadav for declaring me as the candidate for the post of mayor of Gorakhpur.
